The Pickens Democrats and Appalachian Indivisible health care forum drew a surprising crowd of more than 60 people to Chattahoochee Tech considering Thursday was a rainy night during summer vacation.
More surprising was the number and depth of the questions. The audience wanted to talk minutiae of national health care with the panel of three health care speakers and one congressional candidate.

On Saturday evening, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Department of Community Supervision, the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force, the Appalachian Judicial Circuit Accountability and Pickens 911 teamed up to conduct several impaired driver checkpoints. These checkpoints were in the Pea Ridge area. The sheriff had received numerous calls from citizens asking for increased visibility in the area due to different types of criminal activity.
Pickens Sheriff and Canton Police officers make a large showing at a Jasper residence the morning following the deadly shooting in Canton. Two men considered “persons of interest” were taken into custody on minor charges.
A Jasper man and a Ball Ground man have been tied to the deadly Canton shootings and arrested on lesser charges involving the June 25th incident. A Marietta man has been charged with the felony murder.
With more than 70 rounds fired, the shootings left two dead and one injured.

Planning survey shows small town feel a desired trait

Pickens County has begun the year-long process of updating their Joint Comprehensive Plan, with a recent public survey revealing concerns about the county’s future and suggestions planners say will be valuable.
Members of the public have been asked to participate in the state-mandated process. Pickens County Planning & Development Director Richard Osborne has called the plan a “general vision for the future,” and said it could impact issues like zoning, emergency management planning, ordinances and public safety. The plan must be completely updated every 10 years for the county to be eligible for certain grants and funding.
